TANIUCHI Rokuro’s Works; from the covers of the weekly magazine Shukan Shincho
Arai Ryoji's Selection Every week I used to see Taniuchi Rokuro

2023 Sat July 8 〜 2023 Sun October 1

Closed: Mon. August 7, Mon. September 4

Taniuchi Rokuro illustrated approximately 1,300 covers for the weekly magazine Shukan Shincho since its initial publication in 1956, over a quarter of a century until his death in 1981. At the TANIUCHI Rokuro Pavilion, artwork is changed out four times a year, to introduce the world of Taniuchi Rokuro’s cover art from a variety of perspectives.

During the second exhibition of 2023, we’ll introduce cover art selected by picture book author Arai Ryoji (1956-). Mr. Arai goes beyond the borders of “picture book author”, as he is active in various genres such as producing three-dimensional installations and making music. His picture books, full of delicate and rich colors and simple, warm language, are loved by many, from children to adults. Which of Taniuchi’s works appeal to Mr. Arai, who perceives the world with a child-like, innocent view? In this exhibition, the charms of Taniuchi Rokuro’s representative work, his cover art for the weekly magazine Shukan Shincho, are rediscovered through the eyes of Mr. Arai.
