OVER THE ABSENCE - WHITE BLANKS

2023 Sat October 7 〜 2023 Sun December 24

Closed: Mon. November 6, Mon. December 4

The Yokosuka Museum of Art holds four exhibitions each year of works from our collection. The works being shown in this exhibition include modern and contemporary Japanese art, together with works by artists with special connections to Yokosuka.

This time, in Exhibition Hall 4, from the museum collection, a broad range of nihonga (Japanese-style paintings) dating from the Meiji era to after World War II are introduced. In Exhibition Hall 5, the Asai Kan’emon Hall, the theme is “Asai Kan’emon and Buffoonery.” In Exhibition Hall 6, there are sound sculptures by Harada Kazuo entitled ΣΙΔΕΡΟ ΗΧΟΣ for you to experience the sound of iron.

Presented as a special section in the north-side Gallery and Exhibition Hall 8 is Katsumata Toyoko: Over the Absence—White Blanks.

Katsumata Toyoko lives in Miura-shi. With the “body” as her theme, she has been working from the 1970s on a broad range of expressions combining three-dimensional works, photographs, drawings, videos, etc. Iron with a particularly strong presence, screen images of the body enlarged through a lens, two-dimensional works lacking a sense of reality so that it is hard to grasp the image, etc.—this group of works, each stimulating the tactile sensation with a different sense of materiality, jolts our sensory perception.
