TANIUCHI Rokuro produced the cover art for the weekly magazine Shukan Shincho from its launch in 1956 until his death in 1981, creating more than 1,300 paintings over a quarter of a century. Every year, we explore the world of Taniuchi’s cover art by selecting four groups of those paintings and changing the works on display four times, examining each group from a different perspective.
This exhibition focuses on the musical instruments that TANIUCHI Rokuro depicted in
his signature work, his cover art for the weekly magazine Shukan Shincho.
Taniuchi
presented musical instruments in many ways in those covers: scenes of people playing
instruments, of course, but also the sounds of everyday life and of natural phenomena
such as wind and rain likened to the sounds of musical instruments.
In them we can
grasp not only his audio sensitivity but also his love of the changing seasons and his
distinctive sense of humor. We invite you to lend an ear to the “instrumental sounds”
notes Taniuchi depicted in his cover art.
