Closed: Tue. November 5, Mon. December 2, Sun. December 29-Fri. January 3, Mon. January 6, Mon. February 3
The Yokosuka Museum of Art holds four exhibitions each year of works from our collection. The works being shown in this exhibition include modern and contemporary Japanese art, together with works by artists with special connections to Yokosuka.
In this period, Exhibition Hall 4 is the Asai Kan’emon Room, featuring India ink paintings from the 1940s by the Yokosuka-related painter (1901–1983). The exhibits include Suzhou scenery painted during the Sino-Japanese War, as well as works based on Tang-dynasty legends, such as that of Zen Master Fenggan of Guoqing Temple on Mount Tiantai and his disciples Hanshan and Shide.
From January 4, 2025, Exhibition Halls 6 and 7 present prints by SHIMADA Shizu (1923–2021), a Western-style painter active in Japan and Paris.
The northern part of the gallery and Exhibition Hall 8 host the special display Strolls around Kanagawa in connection with Interaction of 20th Century Arts in Two Collections (November 16–December 22), a joint project with the Hakone Open-Air Museum in the same prefecture. It features works from our collection depicting scenery of Kanagawa as well as those by artists associated with the prefecture. Works on display will include paintings of Yokohama and Yokosuka by Western-style painter SHIMADA Shozo (1933–2016) and three-dimensional works made of wood by sculptor MOGAMI Hisayuki (1936–2018).
