TANIUCHI Rokuro created approximately 1,300 cover paintings over a quarter of a century, from the first issue of Shukan Shincho in 1956 until his death in 1981. The museum introduces the world of Rokuro Taniuchi's cover paintings from various perspectives, changing the works each year.
The subject of the second exhibition in 2025 is “Lighthouse and Sea,” with a selection of 20 cover paintings with lighthouses and thirty of the sea. Taniuchi produced cover art depicting lighthouses throughout the years when he was in charge of the magazine’s cover art, from 1957 to 1980.
Taniuchi Rokuro wrote, “I like lighthouses and often go sketch them, so I remember all sorts of them, large and small” (from “Lighthouse Kid,” cover comments). His early works depicted lighthouses in Chiba. Starting in the latter half of the 1960s, however, he would go with his wife and small children to visit Kannonzaki in Yokosuka and sketch the lighthouse there. In 1971, Taniuchi was named Kannonzaki Lighthouse Keeper for a Day; in 1975, he established his atelier near Kannonzaki Park.
That connection inspired his heirs in 1998 to donate a huge number of Taniuchi’s works, including more than 1,300 of his original paintings for Shukan Shincho covers, plus related materials, to the city of Yokosuka. The Taniuchi Rokuro Pavilion opened at the Yokosuka Museum of Art in 2007.
